Construction Watch: Stabilization work at Michter's Distillery in the Ft. Nelson Building

Following several weeks of foundation and footer work, structural steel supports have gone up to provide stabilization for the bulging east wall of the building, blocking much of the currently closed Eighth Street.

  1. Is that external steel structure for construction only or will it remain permanently? Hopefully it will be removed because it's rather ugly.

    1. It’s only temporary, while they shore up the structure from the inside.

Previously, there was a stairwell collapse inside and when the engineers were analyzing the building for the distillery conversion they determined that the east wall was dangerously close to collapse. At that point, Eighth Street was closed for public safety. Once the interior structure has been stabilized and better tied back into that wall, the exterior bracing will be removed and the street reopened.
